A Tale of Three Lions
"A Tale of Three Lions" is an Allan Quatermain adventure. In this tale, Quatermain and his son Harry try their hand at gold mining in South Africa. After a successful find, Quatermain and his companions Jim-Jim and Pharaoh battle lions that terrorize their camp.
Atalanta Magazine serialized "TTL" between October and December 1887. This edition was accompanied by four full-page illustrations and one decorative chapter heading by Heywood Hardy. "TTL" was later published in Allan's Wife & Other Tales beside Allan's Wife, "Hunter Quatermain's Story," and "Long Odds." Charles Kerr and Maurice Greiffenhagen illustrated "TTL" for the AW&OT edition. An illustrated version of "TTL" also appears in Allan the Hunter; a tale of three lions [and Prince: another lion] beside the story "Prince: another lion" (although I can find no evidence that Haggard wrote this latter tale). In 1898 Lothrop Publishing Company, Boston, published another edition of AH. Hurst & Co., New York, published a pirated edition combining two novellas titled A Tale of Three Lions, and On Going Back, the second written by Capt. LC Kingston.
