Haggard had invented the plot of <span style="font-style:italic;">VS</span> in 1891 as an alternative to the one used in <a href="http://www.visualhaggard.org/novels/8"><span style="font-style:italic;">Montezuma's Daughter</span></a>. On 26 January 1922 Cassell and Co., London, published the first UK edition of <span style="font-style:italic;">VS</span> in an issue of 11,000.
