Higgins explains that the idea for this story originated during his trip to Australia in 1916 while watching the albatrosses. In fact, Haggard's diary records that he considered titling this romance <span style="font-style:italic;">The Fatal Albatross</span>. On 4 January 1929 Hutchinson and Co., London, published the first UK edition of <span style="font-style:italic;">MMI</span>.
