When the World Shook
Possibly H. Rider Haggard's most spiritual romance, When the World Shook, Being an Account of the Great Adventure of Bastin, Bickley & Arbuthnot is a story dense with philosophical and religious ideas. Set partially in Atlantis, the three heroes—a millionaire, a pastor, and a scientist—must convince the ancient god they awaken not to destroy the world. The Quiver serialized WWS from November 1918 through April 1919, and this printing was illustrated by A. C. Michael. Cassell and Co., London, published the first book edition of WWS on 20 March 1919 in an issue of 14,000 copies. This edition featured four star-charts. Longmans, Green, New York, published the first US edition on 22 May 1919.
