Hodder and Stoughton, London, published the first book edition on 28 August 1911 in an issue of 13,500 copies. This printing featured 4 full-page color illustrations by <a href="http://www.visualhaggard.org/illustrators/6">A. C. Michael</a> on glossy paper. The first US edition, published by Doubleday, Garden City, also included the same 4 illustrations by Michael. Later editions,<a href="http://www.visualhaggard.org/editions/73"> such as the 1912 edition by Doubleday, Page & Co.</a>, included only a frontispiece. Grossett & Dunlap purchased the remaining unsold copies from Doubleday and issued its own edition, which bound Doubleday's sheets into new boards.
