The Mahatma and the Hare, A Dream Story
The Mahatma and the Hare: A Dream Story is a romance novella that dramatizes Haggard’s belief in animal souls. In this spiritual tale, a hare tells an Eastern mystic, or Mahatma, about the terror of being hunted. Longmans, Green, and Co., London, published the first edition of TMATH on 16 October 1911. Illustrators W. T. Horton and H. M. Brock each contributed six full-page prints. Longmans issued this edition in a printing of 5,000 copies. Henry Holt, New York, used identical illustrations for an edition published in October 1911.
