Riou's illustrations appeared in many books, but he is best remembered for illustrating five of Jules Verne's science fiction novels including <span style="font-style:italic;">Five Weeks in a Balloon</span> (1865), <span style="font-style:italic;">Journey to the Center of the Earth</span> (1867), and <span style="font-style:italic;">Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea</span> (1871). The French illustrator and engraver Édouard Riou (1833-1900) was born on 2 December 1833 in Saint-Servan, Ille-et-Vilaine. He trained with artists Charles-François Daubigny and Gustave Doré.
