Magepa the Buck
"Magepa the Buck" is an Allan Quatermain adventure set in South Africa. In this tragic story the noble Zulu warrior Magepa sacrifices himself to save his grandson. "MB" was originally published in Pear's Christmas Annual in 1912. In 1914 Hodder & Stoughton, London, published an issue of "MB" illustrated by Byam Shaw in the charitable anthology Princess Mary's Gift Book, for which "All profit from sale are given to the Queen's 'Work for Women' fund which is acting in conjunction with The National Relief Fund." Haggard's collection of stories Smith and the Pharaohs, published by J.W. Arrowsmith Ltd., Bristol and London, on 4 November 1920, also printed "MB," but this printing was not illustrated.
